Children with cerebral palsy come to Stick ‘n’ Step to access specialised class-based activities such as exercises, games, and massages that help each child improve their mobility and confidence. These conductive education classes are invaluable in supporting children to regain movement and lead a fuller life. The PH Holt Foundation provided funding for five young children to attend these education classes and recover their physical abilities.

The Derbyshire Hill Family Centre in St Helens opened in 1982, converted from an old bus garage. The Centre provides a meeting point for a variety of resident and community groups, has office space, meeting rooms, a multi-function sports hall, cafe area, IT training room and is developing an outdoor garden. £9,500 of PH Holt funding has transformed land to the rear of the Centre into a garden which is utilised by the community for social, therapeutic and educational purposes.
A sensory garden with wheelchair friendly pathways, raised flower beds and a vegetable garden have been created for groups and schools to enjoy.

Wirral Community Narrowboat Trust
£5,000 for boat trips for disabled people
Wirral Community Narrowboat Trust provides opportunities for disabled adults and children with physical conditions or learning difficulties to socialise and experience life outside of a day centre or special school.
Each year, 3,000 people benefit from canal cruises operated by fully trained volunteers. Boats are maintained by over 100 volunteers each year and have been specially adapted for people with disabilities.

The charity provides freshly cooked lunches for elderly people who are housebound in North Sefton. Hot meals are delivered by volunteer drivers, and sit-down meals are available four days a week at the centre. Throughout the week, activities, garden classes, and coffee mornings are a lifeline for many people who live alone or have age-related health conditions.
For the last two years, PH Holt funding has funded the salary costs of a catering manager for this vital community service.

The Hope Centre in Aintree caters for up to 20,000 people a year through its foodbank, drop-in services, community café and activity sessions. The PH Holt Foundation helped fund the centre’s renovations, transforming it from a school to a busy local hub for the community.

Emmaus Merseyside is one of 28 Emmaus projects across the UK. Emmaus projects provide accommodation and employment for homeless people to rebuild their lives. People who live at Emmaus help to run the facility, prepare the food, clean the premises, renovate furniture and work in the shop.
The PH Holt Foundation contributed to the construction of a new 26-bed facility and a community shop selling second-hand furniture, clothing, books, and bric-a-brac.

The Carers Support Service provides emotional and practical support to carers from Black and ethnic communities. Originally, the service started with a handful of carers, but within the last 3 years, over 200 carers and families have accessed the service. They run arts and crafts, cookery, and English classes, giving carers a break.
The PH Holt Foundation helped with the purchase cookery equipment.

Imagine If Trust works to change the lives of disadvantaged people through a range of community projects. The PH Holt Foundation funded the expansion of its food storage facilities after demand from local people for food relief rose sharply. The Foodbank works across drop-in locations in Wavertree, Toxteth, and Kensington to provide food parcels to over 1,000 people each month.

“Vision without Sight” provided visually impaired people with low-vision adapted equipment to experience pottery, sculpture, and ceramic arts. KIND opened its SEED Centre teaching facility in 2008. It is a fit-for-purpose “green” building, constructed using recycled materials from sustainable sources, which brings learning to life. Photo voltaic cells and solar panels provide electricity, rainwater is collected for re-use in the centre and garden, and a small energy-generating wind turbine are just a few examples of how the Centre can show children practical environmental sustainability under one roof.
As well as modern classroom facilities, there is a garden with a range of plant life, a wildlife pond and an allotment. Here, children can explore and learn about the environment and how to grow vegetables.

The Ariel Trust is an education charity developing digital resources with the aim of engaging and motivating young people who have switched off from learning. PH Holt funded the development of an interactive website, mapped to the curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4, to improve mathematical ability. The “Just one more” website reached 20,000 school children and shaped their academic achievement.

The Pagoda Chinese Community Centre, founded in 1982, offers language classes, a drop-in service, leisure activities, and art and cultural projects. A unique youth orchestra is at the cutting edge of contemporary and classical Chinese music, creating opportunities for young people to learn an instrument and perform to world-wide audiences. They also run workshops for communities across the region to improve people’s understanding of Chinese culture.

Centre 63 delivers programmes assisting homeless and disadvantaged young people in Kirkby.
The PH Holt Foundation funded Centre 63’s Eating on a Budget course for single people and low-income young families to acquire food preparation and cooking skills. The course aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of healthy diets and improve their confidence in cooking from scratch on a tight budget.

The Holt Education Trust provides annual funding to the Faculty of Engineering and Technology to support student bursaries in areas ranging from computing and engineering to maritime studies, the built environment, product design, and mathematics. The faculty encourages students to produce high-quality work that has commercial functions, such as in sensor technologies, maritime logistics, sustainability, and infrastructure development.

DaDaFest is a disability and deaf arts organisation based in Liverpool with a global reputation. They deliver an annual arts programme employing disabled actors, young people’s leadership events, and awareness-raising projects.
PH Holt Foundation funding improved access for people with hearing loss at DaDaFest’s International Festival, “Art of the Lived Experiment.” The festival, first created in 2001, has grown substantially and attracts over 105,000 people.

20 Stories High creates challenging theatre and attracts new audiences with a mix of professional productions, youth theatre and community projects.
PH Holt funded Masterclasses for 250 young people who had not engaged with theatre before to explore the themes of home, friendship and transition as part of the Melody Loses Her Mojo production. Young people acquired skills in puppetry, beat boxing and rapping.

The largest free celebration of African music and culture
Africa Oyé is the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture and takes place annually in Sefton Park, Liverpool. The festival is a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and tolerance. It has played host to artists from right across Africa and also programmes music from South America and the Caribbean with salsa and reggae.
PH Holt funded the Oyé Active Zone at the festival, which provides a programme of activities for all the family.

FACT is a Liverpool-based cinema, an art gallery, and an organisation for the support of film, art, and new media. The Older Person’s programme was aimed at developing the digital skills of retired men in Liverpool. Drawing on their experiences, a heritage trail was developed based on their local knowledge of the community.

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts [LIPA] opened in 1996 in the former Liverpool Institute for Boys building and is an integral part of the UK’s higher education provision for the performing arts. The Institute building has a unique history as being the first purpose-built arts school outside London. The main parts of the property date from 1882, are Grade II listed and are situated within the Canning Street Conservation Area.
The PH Holt Foundation has long been associated with LIPA, funding annual graduation prizes and assisting with improvements to studio facilities.

Malvern Primary School is transforming part of its playing field into a wildlife haven giving local children and families in Knowsley the chance to experience the countryside within their own community. ‘What a Waste’ is a project developed by Rotters Community Composting to help primary schools in Liverpool reduce their waste in a fun and practical way using composting and growing vegetables. The overall aim of the project is to get schools to think about how they can reduce the amount of waste they are sending to landfill, whilst also enhancing and developing their own environmental strategies to make schools more environmentally friendly places.
