£5,000 towards The Gateway Awards for people with a learning disability.
Mencap Wirral is a small independent charity that supports local people with a learning disability and their families. In the last two years they have evolved from a membership group offering social opportunities and small grants, to an organisation that provides much needed services to tackle some of the major issues affecting people with a learning disability. It is estimated that there are 1.5 million people in the UK with a learning disability and just 1 in 3 will take part in some form of education or training.
The Foundation is helping fund the Gateway Awards Programme in Birkenhead and Wallasey. The project works with 36 adults with profound needs and who face significant difficulties in leading a full life. It tackles some of the greatest challenges that are common amongst people with a learning disability, particularly health and isolation and has been specially developed so individuals can set and reach goals in their lives and make positive contributions to their community.
£5,000 of funding towards The Gateway Awards is enabling people with a learning disability to participate in fitness activities and exercise; health education, wellbeing and personal safety; arts projects and leisure activities.
